Over 33 thousand years ago the climate of Yakutia was more severe, and Rhino covered in thick fur and are much larger than modern. These and other discoveries allowed us to make a unique discovery in Abyysky district of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia). Now the world’s only discovered in Yakutia, the baby woolly rhinoceros for the first time put on display to the public in Moscow.

Not deer skin

Businessman Alexander Banderov visibly nervous, the capital’s journalists fastened on him the microphone and adjust the light on the camera. To such attention a normal inhabitant of Yakutia clearly not used to.

«In September 2014, we were preparing for the hunting season. And when you bypass the hunting footage, I noticed high up on the glacier skin. In summer, the river washes away the shore, and formed in the Yar showed up find. At first I thought that this is a deer skin. Then the glacier thawed in about 10 days, and the skin fell down. I immediately reviewed the process and realized it was a Rhino» — said Alexander.

He cleared the find from divot, carefully collected and moved to temporary storage in «glacier». Glacier – carved into the permafrost storage in summer in need of frozen products. And only in early 2015, when all the formalities were settled and found a suitable vehicle, the remains of a rhinoceros were transported to Yakutsk Academy of Sciences, where he began the study.

Baby Rhino got its name in honor of the author of the finds Sasha.

The first ever

«The first results showed that the age of the Rhino is about 34 thousand years is the Karga interglacial period – the period of warming. Thanks to this discovery we learned that rhinos were covered with very thick hair. Earlier we could judge about it based on rock paintings discovered in France. Now, judging by the thick wool undercoat, it can be concluded that nosology was fully adapted to the cold climate right from an early age,» — said the candidate of biological Sciences, senior fellow of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Valery Plotnikov.

According to him, the uniqueness of this find is that for the first time in human history was found relatively well-preserved Rhino, and not the adult, and cub. «Young rhinos will fall quickly, so finding them is quite difficult. Find the skull, part of mandible, and then the whole carcass is almost. However, no internal organs, but preserved some of the foot soft tissues,» he said.

«Young woolly rhinoceros were not found anywhere ever» — supported his colleague senior researcher of the Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, fellow of the Yakut Academy of Sciences Yevgeny Mashchenko. According to him, Russia is not so often make new discoveries, so for the Russian science the detection of a Rhino is very interesting and important.

«How were living mammoths and woolly rhinos, we can only guess at the plants that lived then, according to the minerals that can be identified in the bones of animals, the composition of oxygen isotopes, carbon, which also manages to highlight from the bones. Very different living conditions of these animals from those that we see now in the territory of Yakutia,» said Mashchenko.

The scientist explained that now the climate of Yakutia is more humid and warmer than in the days when we lived mammoths and woolly rhinos. «In those days, 35-50 thousand years ago, the climate was drier and didn’t have those climate zones that now exist. Now the locality is in the area of the tundra, and then such a zone did not exist, there was tundra vegetation and was very good conditions for these herbivores. With plenty of grass, grains. Why are all these giant animals could live there because it was enough food. Now neither the mammoth, nor the woolly Rhino in the tundra there would be nothing,» said Mashchenko.

«Judging by the fact that Rhino is such a bright color, it has managed to molt. And this is the winter coat in which he had to suffer the first winter, but something happened and he died. No, on the preserved part of the mummy damage left by the predator. And we are not yet able to say exactly why he died. Pathogens some bacteria in the tests was not there. We can say that, most likely, be healthy. Maybe later when other studies we can determine why the death occurred», — said Mashchenko.

He added that it is also impossible to determine the sex of a rhinoceros, because it is not preserved internal organs. And these little babies difficult to determine the sex until then, until puberty.

«Of course, work will still continue. Hopefully, by the end of next year there will be a more extensive publication. While he made only presentations at international conferences, where they presented only preliminary results», — said the scientist, adding that is not yet complete genetic analysis.

«My job was to manufacture sculpture nosoroga. During this time I studied the anatomy of a modern rhinoceros, compared. Compared to a modern Rhino, its dimensions are larger. On first visual examination, it was determined that Rhino 1.5 years. More recent studies – in the dentin of teeth allowed us to determine that he’s only seven months. That is, in the past, they evolved faster,» — told reporters the chief laboratory researcher of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Innokenty Pavlov.

Painstaking work with the remains of the rhinoceros – accurate withdrawal of preserved tissues for further study and processing of skins – took Pavlova, according to his confession, about two years.

«In the manufacture of a Rhino I invented embalming solution for anatomical objects with soft tissues. They were treated animal skin. During processing the skins, we almost never lost a woolen blanket. And even the horns not glued, they were initially on the skin,» — said the scientist.

Muscovites can take part in the woolly rhinoceros Sasha in Expo centre from 15 to 17 December. In addition, the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) has included in its exposition is made of skins and bones of the giant hut of the ancient man and the skeleton of a woolly mammoth.
