The return of sprat from the Baltic to the shelves of Russian stores will force domestic manufacturers to pay more attention to the quality of their products and to improve it, the Executive Director of Fisheries Union Sergey Gudkov.

Earlier on Monday, the Rosselkhoznadzor informed about the cancellation of the ban on the supply of canned fish from two Baltic companies. Estonian DGM Shipping AS, according to information on its website, specializiruetsya on the herring and sprat, not releasing at the same sprats with oil, which since Soviet times, are considered a traditional dish in new year’s eve menu. Latvian company SIA Karavela (Kaija brand) has a wider range of canned products, in particular both ordinary and large sprats in oil.

«Inflow «fresh blood» in the form of supplies from abroad will be useful to domestic producers», — told RIA Novosti, Gudkov.

According to him, domestic sprats «not worse, somewhere better quality», but the advantage of import in the stability of this quality. «It is more expensive to transport goods to pay customs duties and there are higher wages, their product will undoubtedly be more expensive, but they can take stable quality», — the expert believes.

«We are for the implementation of WTO rules, let’s compete,» — said Gudkov.

A ban on the supply to Russia of canned fish 44 31 Estonian and Latvian factories were introduced in the summer of 2015. According to the decision of the Rosselkhoznadzor products were removed from sale. The Ministry stated that the ban was linked to the identification of systemic violations, including the lack of control of safety of products and benzapyrene.
