A unique manuscript of the novel «the 120 days of Sodom» written by the Marquis de Sade in the Bastille, considered a national treasure and will be withdrawn from the auction in France, said the auction organizer Claude Agyut.

The manuscript of «the 120 days of Sodom» is a 12-meter-long scroll. Marquis de Sade has created a novel during the imprisonment in the Bastille in 1785 and for fear of searches, each night he hid the manuscript in one of the stones in the chamber. The plot of the novel, which was not published until the twentieth century, is a story of four Libertines and their victims. It was assumed that the manuscript will be sold at the auction house Aguttes on December 20, its pre-sale estimate is four to six million euros.

«The Ministry of culture proposed negotiations for noncompetitive acquisition of these works at the price of the international market,» said the auctioneer AFP. He noted that in addition to the manuscript of de Sade we are talking about the collection of manuscripts of andré Breton, including two Manifestos of surrealism (each estimated at four million euros).

The manuscript, like other lots of trades, included in the collection of the company Aristophil, which filed for bankruptcy in 2015. A huge collection of manuscripts that belonged to the bankrupt company, will be sold at the auction for six years.

Donatienne Alphonse Francois de Sade (Marquis de Sade) is a French writer of the eighteenth century, preached in his works, the absolute freedom of the individual, not limited to religion or morality. Books of de Sade are filled with scenes of violence and descriptions of sexual perversions. Subsequently, the German psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing called «sadism,» sexual gratification obtained by inflicting another person physical or mental suffering.
