The Russian Orthodox Church does not recognize the concept of Church divorce, there is only the situation when the marriage may be considered invalid canonical force, said the Chairman of the Synodal Department for Church and society and the media Vladimir Legoyda, commenting on the recently adopted Council of bishops document «On the canonical aspects of the Church’s marriage.»

«Once there is a second and even a third Church marriage, so there’s a Church divorce? No. This term does not exist in the canonical field. He’s not in this document. And then what is? There are situations where a Church marriage may be considered invalid canonical force. Actually, this gives the possibility of remarriage» — quoted Legoyda, the press service of the Department.

He noted that the document clarifies the reasons previously married the marriage can be considered invalid. At different times the number of such events was different in the current document 11.

According to the representative of the Russian Orthodox Church, when the Church says that in certain circumstances the marriage can be considered invalid canonical force, the key word is «may».

«That is «may» does not mean «must». The document explicitly States, and I quote: «Priests are obliged strongly to remonstrate with individuals seeking divorce, not to make any hasty decisions, but, if possible, to reconcile and save your marriage.» And why we must try to preserve even a marriage that has cracked seriously? Yes, because love is stronger than everything. And most importantly,» concluded Legoyda.
