To produce cheaper magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), using domestic raw materials, offered by the scientists of the National research technological University «MISIS». This will reduce the cost of the device in 1,5 times, and therefore make the MRI procedure more accessible to the public.

Now medicine is unthinkable without an MRI. Doctors send patients to imaging on a variety of cases, and patients themselves, a little serious, running on MRI, without waiting for the appointment. This procedure goes a lot of money from four to 12 thousand rubles, depending on complexity of the study. And the cost of it determines not least the price of the device. One of the ways to reduce it is to use domestic materials and technologies.

«We have developed an innovative technology for production of magnetically hard materials and permanent magnets at low cost manufactured from alloys of a domestic rare earth metals and their compounds, including the obtained in the processing of industrial waste magnetic production», — quotes the press service of the University Evgeny Gorelikova, project Manager, Deputy Director of engineering Center of industrial technology nust «MISIS».

We are talking about low-field MRI scanners, that is, create a weak magnetic field of magnitude 0.5 Tesla. They are used for the majority of tomographic studies. Most of these devices work on rare-earth permanent magnets, purchased in China. Now, as assure of physics from nust «MISIS», we have the opportunity to create their own production of functional components for the scanners.

Using domestic raw materials, they have developed a special wire for the magnetic system of the imager which is superior in its characteristics to foreign analogues. Loss it low, and the saturation magnetization is high — more than two Tesla. Together with the industrial partner JSC «NPO «Magneton» scientists have created a prototype of such a magnetic system.

«Through the use of industrial waste magnetic production and cheap alloys of rare earth metals in the production of raw materials for permanent magnets, we managed to reduce their cost by almost half,» — says Eugene Gorelikov.

Thanks to this innovation, the magnetic system has become lighter by 30% and fell by 50%. The authors hope that a domestic low-cost scanners will be in demand in public health facilities, small clinics, doctors in private practice.
