The European Union (EU) is considering the Transcaspian pipeline project as an important additional element of the project «southern gas corridor» (SGC), said the Deputy head of Cabinet of Vice-President of the European Commission on energy Union Bernd Biervert.

In 2011, the European Union adopted a mandate to negotiate a legally binding Treaty between the EU, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan on construction of TRANS Caspian pipeline system. The agreement on TRANS-Caspian pipeline will provide the basis for the construction of an underwater pipeline linking Turkmenistan with Azerbaijan, and in turn connects this pipeline to infrastructure that will bring gas from Central Asia to the EU.

«For the European Union the project of construction of TRANS-Caspian gas pipeline, providing transportation of gas from Central Asia to the European market, is an important additional element of the project «southern gas corridor», — quotes the words of Pervert Agency Trend.

In his words, «the project of the Transcaspian pipeline meets the interests of both Europe and partners in Turkmenistan». «To this end, in 2015 we signed the Ashgabat Declaration of the Turkmen, Azeri, Turkish and Georgian parties on cooperation in the energy sphere», — he said. Pervert noted that all parties remain committed to the implementation of the Declaration and are in constant contact to explore opportunities for collaboration.

According to the Agency, discussions with Baku and Ashgabat relate, in particular, of the Treaty imposing legal obligations between the European Union, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, the bilateral arrangements necessary for these littoral States to achieve the commissioning, building and operating the TRANS-Caspian pipeline, as well as agreements to fill the pipeline Turkmen gas, including appropriate recognition of commercial arrangements.

The SGC project

«Southern gas corridor» is one of the priority projects for the EU and provides for the transportation of 10 billion cubic meters of Azeri gas from the Caspian region via Georgia and Turkey to Europe.

At the initial stage, the gas produced within the second phase of development of Azerbaijani gas condensate field «Shah Deniz», is regarded as the main source for the projects «southern gas corridor».

At a later stage the project can be connected to other sources. Gas within the second stage of field development will be exported to Turkey and European markets by expanding the South Caucasus gas pipeline and constructing the TRANS-Anatolian (TANAP) and TRANS Adriatic (TAP) pipelines.
