The outbreak of diphtheria began in Yemen, the death rate from the disease is dangerously high and is 10%, told RIA Novosti press-Secretary of the International Committee of the red cross Yolanda the Zhakem.

According to the ICRC, due to the difficult situation in Yemen every 27 resident of this country with a population of 25 million people were infected with cholera, however, it is expected that soon the epidemic will go on recession.

«But there was an outbreak of diphtheria. Currently a little more than 300 people fell ill, of whom 34 died. It’s not much, but we are concerned that the mortality rate is 10%. We are very concerned, as diphtheria is a symptom of insufficient vaccination in Yemen, which had been interrupted during the conflict. These figures show that the population is very weak,» said the Zhakem.

The ICRC representative added that the Committee welcomes the ruling coalition, led by Saudi Arabia, to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid to Yemen, but this is not enough. The zhakem noted the need for the resumption of commercial traffic in Yemen, as the fuel shortage in the country negatively affects the work of hospitals and leads to an increase in the cost of food.
