President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the phone thanked his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin over Russia’s support of UN General Assembly resolution on the status of Jerusalem, told reporters a source in the administration of the Turkish leader.

The UN General Assembly on Thursday adopted a resolution on non-recognition of decisions of the United States on the status of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, during the vote on Thursday voted for the document 128 countries, against — 9, another 35 abstained. According to the document, «any decisions and actions that suggest a change of character, status and demographic composition of the Holy city of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are invalid and must be canceled.» The resolution also «demands that all States» «did not accept any actions or measures which are at odds with the resolutions (UNSC)».

«In a telephone conversation with President of Russia Vladimir Putin, our President thanked him for his support of the draft resolution at the UN General Assembly on Jerusalem. Both sides expressed satisfaction from the fact that the U.S. statement on the status of Jerusalem were illegal and stressed the importance of this resolution in the light of peace and stability in the region», — said the source.

He added that the two leaders discussed the latest developments in Syria, especially in Eastern ghouta, as well as the negotiations on the settlement of the Syrian crisis in Astana.

According to the source, the presidents also touched upon the implementation of projects in the energy and defence sectors and agreed to continue close contacts on various topics.

In early December, the President of the United States Donald trump announced the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and signed a document about the transfer of the us Embassy there from tel Aviv. The decision of the us leader was well received in Israel and aroused a negative reaction from many countries, primarily countries in the Middle East and Palestine.
