As the press centre of the government of the Novgorod region, the Governor and members of the government of the region expressed his condolences to the families of Zaliznyak.

Since 1982, Zaliznyak systematic work for the study of the language of birch bark letters, as already known and newly found during the ongoing excavations in Novgorod region. He is coauthor of the publication «the Novgorod letters on birch bark». Generalizing work of academician in this field was the book «old Novgorod dialect». In 2000, during excavations in Veliky Novgorod was discovered the oldest book of the Rus — Novgorod Codex. Zaliznyak have devoted many years to the reconstruction of the «hidden» texts of this finding.

Academician Andrey Zaliznyak — linguist, specialist in the field of modern and historical Russian grammar, comparative and General linguistics. A number of works devoted to the study of the Novgorod birch-bark letters. Also thanks to the research Zaliznyak was completed the debate on the authenticity of the manuscript of «the Word about Igor’s regiment». In 2008, Zaliznyak was awarded the State prize of the Russian Federation in 2008 — the highest award of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a Large gold medal named after Lomonosov.
