The members of the new crew of ISS-56 in the Center of training cosmonauts trained to go into space to install on an external surface of the station equipment of the ICARUS experiment for the study of migrations of wild animals, the release may take place after may 2018, according to the message of the cosmonaut training Center (CTC) named after Gagarin.

«In hydrotreater complex (swimming pool) TSPK named after Gagarin started special tests in the interests of the EVA-45 (extravehicular activity). The main objective of the planned spacewalk – setup on the external surface of the ISS RS scientific equipment in the framework of the Russian-German experiment is ICARUS, which aims to research and obtaining data on the global migration of animals and birds», — is spoken in the message on the website of CTC.

Now, the stations are members of the ISS ISS 53/54 and 54/55. Russian cosmonauts Anton shkaplerov and Alexander Misurkin will be released in the open space (during EVA-44) on 2 February 2018. According to the previously published plan, sending the spacecraft «Soyuz MS-08 and MS-09» with members of the crews of ISS — 55/56 and 56/57 will be held in March and may of 2018. «Just scheduled three experiments. In January 2018 the main and backup crews of ISS-55/56 and ISS-56/57, consisting of Oleg Artemyev, Alexei Ovchinin, Sergei Prokopyeva and Oleg Kononenko will start training on the target tasks EVA-45,» reports CTC.

Earlier it was reported that the ICARUS experiment will allow to work on Board the ISS and subsequently transferred to satellite tracking technology for a much smaller weight animals than those which is able to track the French system Argos (Advanced Research and Global Observation Satellite), widely used by scientists from different countries. This will be possible due to the fact that the mass fixed on each of the animals and the birds of ICARUS modules will not exceed five grams. The module combines a GLONASS/GPS receiver, a radio transmitter and receiver, battery, solar battery, temperature sensors, and acceleration.

The objective of the research in the framework of the ICARUS experiment is the creation of a functioning system of data transmission between a large number of transmitters, mounted on animals, and on-Board tracking equipment. The establishment is equipped with GLONASS/GPS-receiver module weighing less than five grams will allow you to obtain information about migration of animals weighing less than 200 grams. The data obtained are intended to help in the solution of environmental problems, climate change, preservation of biodiversity, control of invasive species and infectious diseases, the prevention of catastrophic events, ensuring the safety of air traffic. The onboard equipment makes the German side, and RSC Energia is engaged in the creation of interfaces for the installation of this equipment on the Russian segment of the ISS.
