Ukraine and Turkey will never enter the EU, at least in the near future, said the Minister of foreign Affairs of Germany, Sigmar Gabriel in an interview with the publications of the media group Funke.

«I can’t imagine in the coming years, neither Turkey nor Ukraine as a member of the European Union», — said the diplomat.

However, he expressed the view that the EU needs to develop a specific model of interaction with Kiev and Ankara. Gabriel noted that if Brussels and London will be able to reach an effective agreement that will govern relations between the EU and the UK after Brexit, then for the same model, in his opinion, it would be possible to build cooperation with Turkey and Ukraine.

The diplomat also did not rule out that Germany and Turkey can achieve a «closer form the customs Union,» he added, however, that this will be possible only after the change of the situation in Turkey.

Earlier, the Chancellor of Austria Sebastian Kurz has criticized the Turkish government for violation of human rights in the country and stated that Turkey has no place in the EU against the background of its political course.

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko in early December said he intends to hold the country’s referendum on joining the EU and NATO. He stressed that Ukraine is «the worst has passed.» However, the head of the EU delegation in Kiev Hugues Mingarelli, in turn, noted that Ukraine has a fairly low prospect of becoming part of the European integration.
