The successful exchange of prisoners in the Donbass was an important step in the implementation of the Minsk agreements, it shows that further steps are possible, said Wednesday the foreign Minister of Germany, Sigmar Gabriel, was quoted by the newsletter office.

«The good news is that today, after months of negotiations, failed to conduct a broad exchange of prisoners. Sharing is an important step in the implementation of the Minsk agreements, which we actively supported, together with its French partners in the framework of the «Norman format», — said the Minister.

According to Gabriel, followed by «should be followed by other steps to implement the Minsk agreements, the successful exchange of prisoners shows that it is possible.» In particular, it is necessary to strictly observe the recently concluded truce, said the Minister.

He added that the exchange of prisoners in Eastern Ukraine was «the most important humanitarian gesture on the eve of New year and Orthodox Christmas.»

On Wednesday at the Donbass, it was the biggest prisoner exchange since the conflict began. The procedure was observed by representatives of the Special monitoring mission of the OSCE and the International Committee of the red cross. Earlier it was reported that Kiev intends to transfer to 306 people in exchange for 74, which are in the breakaway DNI and LC.
