Deputy foreign Minister Grigory Karasin told about the restoration of relations with Georgia and the strengthening of humanitarian ties between the two countries.

According to him, the tendency to normalize contacts between the two countries there has been a few years ago, «when Mikheil Saakashvili’s party lost parliamentary elections and a new government was formed the country.» Then by common efforts of Moscow and Tbilisi was possible «to achieve notable results in the areas of trade and transport, and to strengthen humanitarian ties.»

«Only in 2017, bilateral trade increased by more than 30%. Russia has become the second most important trading partner of Georgia and the main market for its products, especially wine,» Karasin said the newspaper «Izvestia».

He also added that he is now preparing the reconstruction of the checkpoint «Upper Lars» on the Russian-Georgian border. This will facilitate a ground connection between the mills.

Karasin expressed the hope that «next year will be able to develop these positive trends,» said that Moscow is ready for «comprehensive practical cooperation» and expects «an adequate reaction of the Georgian side».
