President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pope Francis discussed during the telephone talks, the issue of Jerusalem in connection with the decision of the President of the United States Donald trump to recognize the city as the capital of Israel, told journalists a source in the administration of the Turkish leader on Friday.

In early December, trump announced the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and signed a document about the transfer of the us Embassy there from tel Aviv. The decision of the us leader was well received in Israel and aroused a negative reaction from many countries, primarily countries in the Middle East and Palestine.

The UN General Assembly on Thursday adopted a resolution on non-recognition of decisions of the United States on the status of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, during the vote on Thursday voted for the document 128 countries, nine were against and 35 abstained.

According to the source in administration of the President of Turkey, Erdogan and Pope Francis underlined the importance of protecting the existing status of Jerusalem, because this city is sacred to three world religions and plays a key role for stability in the region. The interlocutors noted the necessity of joint efforts to preserve the status of Jerusalem and agreed to a personal meeting in the near future.
