The current President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan called on Friday the candidacy of Ambassador to the UK Armen Sargsyan for the post of President of the country, said on Friday the presidential press service.

The candidacy of Sargsyan was approved at the meeting of the Executive body of the ruling Republican party of Armenia. Sargsyan nominated as the leader of the Republican party, the largest parliamentary party and later the party can nominate the candidates for election.

«Sargsyan today held a meeting with the nominated Executive body of the Republican party of Armenian President Armen Sargsyan. The President, on behalf of the majority in Parliament political forces invited Sargsyan to agree to the nomination as the presidential candidate of the Republic of Armenia», — stated in the message published on the website of the President.

After the end of the presidential term Sargsyan will finally enter into force the new text of the Constitution, according to which the power is concentrated in the hands of the Parliament and government, and the functions of the President which will be elected by the Parliament, will be representative.

Armen Sargsyan was born in 1953 in Yerevan. He graduated from the Yerevan state University and the graduate school. Candidate of physico-mathematical Sciences. Member of the international Institute for strategic studies, the Royal astronomical society, an honorary member of the pan-Armenian academic and scientific society and other international organizations. The author of dozens of scientific articles and textbooks on the topics of politics, theoretical physics, astrophysics and computer modeling.

In the early 1990-ies was the head of the Department of computer modeling of complex systems Yerevan state University. In 1992 he transferred to the diplomatic service, was the charge d’affaires of Armenia in the UK, and then Ambassador to that country, Armenia’s Ambassador to EU, Belgium, the Netherlands, Vatican city, Luxembourg. In 1996, a few months held the post of Prime Minister.

Subsequently, he worked in the private sector, was the main consultant for British petroleum, Alcatel, Telefonica, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch. Appointed Ambassador in the UK in 2013, prior to that, he held the same position in 1998-2000.
