Lebanese President Michel Naim Aoun on Monday signed a decree setting the date of parliamentary elections, according to local newspaper Naharnet.

According to the newspaper, the elections scheduled for may 6, 2018. In addition to the President’s decree was also signed by Prime Minister Saad Hariri and the Minister of internal Affairs of Lebanon Nuhad Mashnouk.

«In these elections, the Lebanese have to make the right choices that will lead to the election of those who really meets their wishes and needs,» said Aung.

According to the publication, for the first time in the history of Lebanese elections will be held on the basis of a proportional system of voting.

The Lebanese government on June 14 approved the consistent results of numerous consultations between the leading political parties of Lebanon new draft law on elections. While agreement was reached on the extension of parliamentary powers of the current composition of the Parliament for 11 months. According to the foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation, 16 June the Chamber of deputies of Lebanon by a majority vote approved these decisions.

The current composition of the Parliament of Lebanon has been working since 2009. Elections were to be held in 2013, however, the deputies repeatedly extended its mandate because of the political instability in the country and controversies about a new electoral law.
