The Russian Orthodox Church canonized the Emperor Nicholas II and his family for what they put moral ideals above the Royal crown, said the Patriarch at the opening of the Christmas readings.

«Like the reward of love that reigned in this family, they remained inseparable in death. The Christian moral ideals were higher for them the Royal crown. Not belonging to a Royal or noble family they are considered a sign of nobility, but the purity of thought and purity of soul», — said the Patriarch.

The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church led string of the letters of the Emperor’s daughter, Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna. «Father asked me to convey to all those who remained loyal to him… that they did not avenge him, as he forgave all, and for them to pray, and not to avenge himself, and to remember that the evil which is now in the world, will be even stronger, but not evil conquer evil, but only love» — quoted the Patriarch letter.

«Sometimes ask for that canonized the Royal family. But for this,» he added, noting that the Royal family had been «under tremendous stress» to preserve the moral character.

Nicholas II with his family was shot in the night from 16 to 17 July 1918 in the Ipatiev house in Yekaterinburg. In 2000, the Council of bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church canonized the Royal family, declaring them «the Royal martyrs».

The controversy surrounding the identity of the last Russian monarch and display it in the culture erupted last year in anticipation of the release of the film by Alexei Uchitel «Matilda», about the fate of the ballerina Matilda Kschessinska, and fell in love with future Emperor Nicholas II. The Deputy of the state Duma Natalia Poklonskaya wrote to the Prosecutor General over 40 complaints, ensuring that the film is not released, because, in her opinion, the picture offends the memory of the canonized king and the feelings of believers. The teacher called invalid attempts Poklonskaya affect the rolling destiny of a film. In the past year, believers all over the country staged protests against the film.
