Members of the Holocaust memorial Day, held in the European Parliament, called on EU politicians to protect the Jews and to formulate a new ideology, as lately on the continent badly taught the subject of the Holocaust among some citizens grow radicalized.

The European Jewish Congress organized in the European Parliament commemorative event «Holocaust memorial Day». Its purpose is to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust and to convey to the present generations how important it is to know and remember the past in order to prevent the recurrence of such tragedies in the future. Commemorative event dedicated to the international Day of remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust on January 27. On this day the Soviet army liberated the largest concentration camp Auschwitz.

«Ladies and gentlemen, I want to draw your attention to the events that occurred in just one year. The Jews of Bochum in Germany have to hide who they are for fear of being attacked. In the Swedish city of Gothenburg synagogue threw bottles with an incendiary mix. At meetings in Vienna, London and Berlin, there were calls to kill the Jews. And we’re not talking about 1933. Ladies and gentlemen, it was the headlines of 2017», — said the speaker of the Israeli Knesset (Assembly) Yuli-Yoel Edelstein.

According to him, the Jews appreciate wholeheartedly the efforts that are taking in Europe to protect Jews and anti-Semitism.

«But what is the message, when community leaders one day participate in the procession hand in hand with the Jews, and the next day, take part in anti-Israel campaign? When leaders embrace the Rabbi of the local community after a crime has been committed in hate, but at the same time, treat Hamas as a legitimate participant? When it is confirmed that the attack was anti-Semitic, but then begin to beat Israel, accusing him of war crimes? These conflicting promises are not credible. They only prevent us from carrying out our General obligations», — said the representative of the Knesset of Israel.

The violation of a taboo

About the problem of the rise of Nazism in the EU, said during his speech, the President of the European Jewish Congress Viatcheslav Moshe Kantor.

In his opinion, today’s education system is not doing enough to explain to young Europeans, which can lead to intolerance. Also, «polite European society does not consider» that the manifestations of anti-Semitism is totally unacceptable in political debate or in the media or in conversations at dinner. He believes that is still discrimination against Gypsies, homosexuals, disabled and political dissidents, and individual Jews, the Jewish community or the Jewish state is not free from manifestations of hate and intolerance to them.

As noted by Cantor, in 2017 increase in the number of anti-Semitic incidents, largely because the «Gentile a thousand miles from Europe» made diplomatic statements,» voicing the «self-evident truth that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.»

«What was once considered taboo, now again became the norm in Europe: racist and anti-Semitic parties received seats in our parliaments and governments, spread conspiracy theories about Jewish power and influence, ultra-right and ultra-left make of the Jews scapegoats,» said Kantor.

«We welcome a very important step made by this chamber in June last year, when it adopted its first decision exclusively devoted to combating anti-Semitism,» — said the President of the EJC, referring to the EP statement that all types of violence against European Jews is incompatible with EU values, and determination to fight anti-Semitism, to promote education about the Holocaust and to ensure the safety of Jewish life in the same way as other European citizens.

A ray of light in the darkness

However, there was a possible solution to the current situation, said Kantor.

«I am glad to announce the initiative of the European Council on tolerance and reconciliation to establish the organization, which will include international experts, including leading historians and philosophers. They will develop the General principles of the concept of secure tolerance. We all desperately need a new European ideology that would serve as the basis for a new pan-European and national legislation», — he said.
