South Korea opened a trade dispute at the world trade organization (WTO), demanding to review the protectionist US tariffs on the import of washing machines, from the data of the WTO.

«The Republic of Korea requires consultation with the U.S. government in accordance with the agreement on safeguards and the agreement on tariffs and trade, the WTO regarding the US tariffs on the import of large-size washing machines… the Republic of Korea considers that these measures are inconsistent with U.S. obligations under the WTO agreements,» — said in a statement on the organization’s website.

The US President Donald trump on Tuesday signed restrictions on the import into the United States of washing machines and solar cells, he told reporters that «a trade war will not.»

USA explained this decision by the fact that foreign manufacturers, mostly Chinese, are actively dumping on the American market and thereby ruining the American consumers. Thus, the previous duties — specifically against China — had no effect, because Chinese business is immediately transferred production to countries affected by the duties.

As said on Tuesday the government Agency for trade (United States Trade Representative), the first 1.2 million large-size washing machines imported per year will be subject to duties of 20%, the future supply — rate of 50%. By the third year of the program, duties will be reduced to 40%, respectively.

China and South Korea are the main exporters of this technique, criticized this decision.
