Consideration by the UN Commission on the limits of the continental shelf of the Russian proposal on the Arctic continues to talk about the shutdown too early, reported RIA Novosti source in the Russian delegation.

Russia in 2015 has submitted to the UN a revised application for the expansion of the boundaries of its continental shelf in the Arctic by joining the submarine Lomonosov ridge, which stretches in the direction of the North pole, and others. Regular session of the UN Commission on the limits of the continental shelf begins its work in new York city on January 29 and will run until March 16.

«This session will continue to consider the application to talk about its conclusion is premature. As it was announced initially, this work may take several years», – said the Agency interlocutor.

According to him, the Minister of natural resources Sergey Donskoy is not going to the forthcoming session of the UN Commission.

Russia in 2001, announced its claim on the rich hydrocarbon portion of the shelf, including the Lomonosov ridge and Mendeleev ridges, but its application was rejected due to lack of geological information. A new expedition to the North pole, geological and geophysical studies in the Arctic ocean for the study of the geological nature of the Mendeleev and Lomonosov ridge and the bathymetric survey took more than ten years.

Prognostic resources of hydrocarbons of the examined fields — 4.9 billion tons of fuel equivalent. According to the UN Convention on the law of the sea, for the extension of the shelf it is necessary to prove the continental nature of adjacent geological structures on the ocean floor.
