The issues of easing the visa regime between Japan and Russia was discussed during the meeting with Hiroshige Seko, who served as Minister of economy, Minister for the development of relations with Russia and head of the Japanese-Russian discussion club of the house of councilors of the Japanese Parliament, the journalists said the Chairman of the international Affairs Committee of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev, who heads the Advisory Board of the Russian-Japanese inter-parliamentary and interregional cooperation.

«We talked about the necessity of easing the visa regime between Russia and Japan. This issue is still exists more in the regional context: the simplification of the visa procedures or the abolition of visas for Sakhalin and Hokkaido,» said Kosachev.

He also said that a month ago, Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking before Parliament in the Federation Council, called Japan «one of those countries with which visa facilitation and subsequent abolition of visas relevant.»

The abolition of visas between the two countries, according to Kosachev, «could be a significant factor, which would allow us to move forward including in the implementation of projects of joint management» of the southern Kuril Islands.

At the same time, Kosachev stressed that the subject was of mutual interest, but «no concrete decision in this regard is not visible».
