Polish law, which criminalizes attempts to accuse poles of complicity in the crimes of Nazi Germany, including the Holocaust, is offensive to the Jews and the poles, therefore, the Polish authorities should carefully study this question, stated RIA Novosti the head of the Council of European rabbis, chief Rabbi of Moscow Pinchas Goldschmidt.

The package of amendments to the law on the Institute of national remembrance of Poland, adopted on Friday, the Sejm (the lower chamber of the Parliament), provides for up to three years in prison for the use of the expression «Polish death camps» and other statements that can be interpreted as an attempt to put the poles complicit in the crimes of Nazi Germany. The amendments provoked protests from Israel, the authorities which demanded him to reconsider, accusing the authors ‘ attempt at historical truth.

«The revival of the Jewish community in Poland today is truly a miracle and we are very grateful to the current and previous government of Poland for their efforts for the development of the community. However, this does not justify liability for the participation of Poland in the Holocaust. The new law may not change or erase history. A similar initiative is an insult to the memory of the many victims — the poles, the Jews, including Polish Jews,» said Goldschmidt.

According to him, the rabbinical Council of Europe urges the Polish government to establish a Commission of experts to «once and for all to determine» the level of cooperation of Polish citizens with the Nazis and their contribution to saving Jews during the Holocaust.
