Exports of Russian coal to Poland has increased by about a third in 2017 and covers approximately 40% of the private sector, said in an interview with RIA Novosti trade representative of Russia in Poland Vladimir Nefedov.

«Last year, exports of Russian coal to Poland, according to preliminary estimates, increased by about a third — more than 6.7 million tons with domestic production at 66 million tons,» said Nefedov.

He explained that Poland buys coal in Russia because relatively accessible deposits of high quality coal in Poland are depleted, the cost of production increases and environmental requirements become tougher. This enhances the competitiveness of cheaper and quality of Russian coals.

Despite this, in Poland do not stop trying in every way to limit its imports. «Introduced stringent requirements for sorting, and then seriously discusses the idea of the introduction of a environmental tax for Russian suppliers. In addition, the energy companies with state participation obliged to buy Polish coal. This is Russian coal being touted as a factor of threat to the interests of the Polish miners,» — said the Russian trade representative. As a result the main niche Russian coal heating stays in the private sector, where it occupies about 40%, he said.

However, the recent accusations against Poland on the part of Ukraine that buys through Russia from the Donbass coal, the interlocutor of Agency characterizes as unnecessarily bloated. «This is purely a media splash. Some Polish media tried to inflate this topic, but the reaction of the officials, as far as I know, was not followed,» said Nefedov.

«Obviously, the scale supposedly identified supply is so insignificant that it is not worth the ink and paper. Many Polish journalists are trained to «make a point» at the words «Donbass», «Russia», «coal», and from combinations of these words they are very excited, especially if you can somehow cast a shadow on the import of Russian coal,» — he added.
