Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Russia to Lithuania Alexander Udaltsov on Tuesday awarded the medal of Honor to the Metropolitan vilenskogo and Lithuania innocent, the correspondent of RIA Novosti.

«I have the honour to congratulate the Metropolitan of Vilnius and Lithuania innocent, who for many years unceasingly works for the good of the Russian Orthodox Church. For more than seven years you are the head of Vilnius and Lithuanian diocese, with your name firmly associated with the strengthening position of the Orthodox Church in Lithuania. The special attention you pay to the educational and social work, education of the younger generation,» — said during the ceremony of the order of Udaltsov.

He noted that on 3 October last year the decree of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin, Metropolitan Innokenty of Vilna and Lithuania was awarded the medal of Honor for his great contribution to the preservation of the Russian cultural and spiritual heritage, strengthening friendship between the Russian Federation and Lithuania.

Metropolitan Innokenty thanked Russia for the high award and to all who worked many years with him and noted that «all contribute and work in peace, the good of the people, in the name of friendship.»

In a solemn ceremony of awarding was attended by representatives of the Orthodox Church the Baltic republics, politicians, public figures, representatives of diplomatic agencies. Congratulations were made by Ambassador extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Lithuania Alexander Korol. «We sincerely wish you health, prosperity, joy in all things and long service of God,» — said at the ceremony the King.

Metropolitan Innokenty of Vilna and Lithuania (Valery Fedorovich Vasiliev) was born on 9 October 1947 in the town of Staraya Russa of the Novgorod region. In may 1981, he was ordained deacon in August to the priesthood. Innocent since 1981 he served in the Kursk region, Irkutsk, Khabarovsk and Irkutsk districts. In 1989 he graduated from the Moscow theological Seminary. In 1992, the priest was tonsured a monk at the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, and in 2002 elevated to the rank of Archbishop. In 2010 the Holy Synod appointed the Reverend Innokenty of Vilnius and Lithuania.

Later innocent became Abbot of Holy spirit monastery in Vilnius. In 2016, the innocent at the divine Liturgy in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, his Holiness Patriarch Kirill elevated to the rank of Metropolitan. Metropolitan Innokenty of Vilna and Lithuania is the recipient of several ecclesiastical awards and the state order of friendship of peoples.
