The European Union extended sanctions against the ex-President of Tunisia and his entourage

The European Union on Tuesday extended for one year sanctions against the ex-President of Tunisia zine El Abidine Ben Ali and his entourage, evidenced by publication in the Official journal of the EU.

«This decision will be valid until 31 January 2019. It must constantly be reviewed. It may be extended or amended if the Council deems that its objectives have not been achieved,» — says the decision to extend the sanctions, which was due to expire at the end of January 2018.

Individual EU sanctions against ex-President of Tunisia and his entourage was introduced on 31 January 2011, February 2011, in the sanctions list included 48 people. The restrictive measures include the freezing of assets in EU and a ban on entering the territory of the European Union.

Ben Ali in 2011, fled Tunisia to Saudi Arabia after the «Jasmine revolution» that was caused by the discontent of the population by social conditions, revelry of corruption and unemployment. Then as a result of mass riots killed more than 80 people.
