Russia requested consultations with the European Union in the framework of the world trade organization (WTO) in the case of the import of pork, according to the materials of the organization.

In his address, Moscow stressed that the decision complied with WTO restrictions on the supply of these products from the EU.

The Rosselkhoznadzor has banned the supply to pork from the EU since the end of January 2014 due to the outbreak of ASF in Lithuania and Poland. In 2017 Russia at the request of the WTO has removed this prohibition, but he continues to act not because of ASF, and on the basis of the food embargo.

In early January it became known that the EU intends to collect from Russia of 1.39 billion euros a year because of the restrictions on imports of this meat. Given a figure equal to the value of pork exports from the EU to Russia in 2013, and the amount of penalties every year will rise by 15 percent.

Russia has declared groundlessness of the claims of the EU and the intention to convene a new panel of arbitrators to re-examine already completed the requirements of the WTO. As explained in the Ministry of economic development, it was not about any penalty or compensation to the plaintiff’s losses, and about the response the EU law for non-performance against Russia of its obligations under the WTO agreement.

Last week the Minister of economic development Maxim Oreshkin said that Russia had held consultations with the EU on pork and will continue the dialogue, mutual of new claims in the WTO on this subject will not.
