Raccoons living in the Moscow zoo, woke up, despite the cold weather, now the animals quite active, but from time to time leave the house to go back to sleep, told RIA Novosti head of Department of external communications of the zoo, Mohammed said.

«Now the raccoons are quite active, they explore their own enclosure, sniff every snow, deftly climbed up a tree. From time to time they go to your warm house, to warm up or to sleep. However, cold is not terrible: thick and long fur raccoons tolerate low temperatures. The fact that they woke up at the end of February, is not an anomaly from the standpoint of zoologists,» — said Saraliev.

According to him, this year the raccoons got into hibernation the first inhabitants of the Moscow zoo. However, their sleep is different from the one in which drain marmots and bears: in the winter months raccoons simply cease to leave their shelter and are half asleep.

«From time to time they can even go outside to check, not over whether the cold, and to warm up and play. Another unique feature of raccoons is that hibernating animals go collectively: several individuals sleep in the same den, huddled close to each other. So they retain heat and endure the cold. Raccoons, like bears, are very sensitive to temperature changes – it is from this factor depends on how deeply they sleep,» explained said.

The rest of the animals, conducting the winter in hibernation, for example, the Himalayan and brown bears, marmots, gerbils and bats will emerge from hibernation in March, but their revival depends on temperature.
