The construction of the railway from the Slovak city of Kosice to the Austrian Vienna employ transit potential of Russia and in the future will help to link the European and Asian markets, said Russian President Vladimir Putin following talks with Federal Chancellor of Austria Sebastian Kurtz.

«During negotiations, the parties discussed joint initiatives in the sphere of transport-logistic infrastructure. First of all, have in mind the construction of the railway from košice to Vienna broad gauge Russian standard. This project has been discussed for a long time, but now seem to budge… is a study of its technical basis and specific mechanisms of funding,» — said Putin.

«We believe that the site Kosice-Vienna in the future will help to link the European and Asian markets. It is important for us as will involve the transit potential of Russia», — said Putin.

A project to create a rail line with a width of 1520 millimeters («broad gauge») from košice to Vienna involved four countries — Russia, Ukraine, Austria and Slovakia. Track gauge of most Railways in Europe — 1435 millimeters; Russia, CIS, Baltic States and Finland — 1520 millimeters. The new route of the wide-gauge rail from Kosice to Vienna will allow to reduce time of cargo delivery from Asia to Europe up to 15 days.
