The ruling coalition of Armenia has nominated Ambassador to Britain, Armen Sargsyan as a presidential candidate in the country, reads the statement of the speaker of Parliament Ara Babloyan.

«On the basis of a written request of 65 MPs of the factions of the Republican party of Armenia and the Armenian revolutionary Federation Armen Sargsyan was nominated a presidential candidate of Armenia,» — said in a statement posted on the parliamentary website.

The document notes that the discussion of the candidacy of the President will begin on March 1 at 10.30 am local time (09.30 GMT).

Vice-speaker of the Armenian Parliament Eduard Sharmazanov told RIA Novosti that the candidacy of Sargsyan will be discussed on Thursday. Depending on the outcome of the deliberations of the election of the President, apparently, will be held in Parliament on 2 March. Sargsyan is the only candidate.

After the completion of the presidential term of incumbent President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan will finally enter into force the new text of the Constitution, according to which the power is concentrated in the hands of the Parliament and government, and the functions of the President which will be elected by the Parliament in early March, will be the representative. Earlier Sargsyan, who heads the Republican party of Armenia (RPA), invited for the post of President Sargsyan’s candidacy.

To elect the President required three-quarters, or 79 votes of deputies from 105, Sargsyan has already enlisted the support of 96 MPs. In addition to the coalition of the factions of the Republican party and the Dashnaktsutyun party, which owns the 65 mandates of the Pro-government candidate promised to vote and formally oppositional fraction «Tsarukyan». It includes 31 member.
