In Chernihiv region, unknown persons attempted to set fire to the Church of the UOC-MP

Unknown tried to set fire to St. Nicholas Church and the chapel of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) in the Chernihiv region of Ukraine, reported on the website of the diocese of Chernigov.

«In the night from Friday to Saturday in Gorodnya unknown committed the desecration of the Orthodox Church. The attackers damaged the St. Nicholas Church and the sanctification of waters chapel in the name of the Pochayiv icon of the Mother of God. It was broken glass in window frames and doors, tried to break the lock and commit arson the doors of the temple,» the message reads.

The press service of the regional police announced that the temple did not abducted, militiamen recorded the fact of the crime, measures are taken to establish the identity of the attacker.

In Ukraine today there are canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC-MP), which is a self-governing Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, and unrecognized by the world Orthodox Church structures — the «Kiev Patriarchate» (UOC-KP) and Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC). The UOC-MP has repeatedly reported on cases of harassment of priests and seizures of Orthodox churches.

The seventeenth of January, unknown persons attempted to set fire to the temple in honor of icon of mother of God «Softener of evil hearts» and St. Peter of the UOC-MP in Kyiv, throwing his Molotov cocktails. Kyiv police opened a criminal case on the fact of arson of the temple. The head of the Synodal information and educational Department of UOC-Moscow Patriarchate Metropolitan Clement said that «this is the thirteenth attack on churches over the past year.»
