All the bears in the Moscow zoo was out of hibernation and first time out of the cages after the winter, told RIA Novosti on Monday the head of Department of external communications of the zoo Mohammed said.

«Two black bear and one Kamchatka brown finally woke up and today was first published in external enclosures. In total animals held in hibernation for four and a half months,» — said the Agency interlocutor.

According to him, this winter predators lay in the den rather late – in early December, had already managed to fall asleep marmots, jerboas, dormice and some of the other inhabitants of the zoo.

«All winter the bears held in the internal space, where an optimal temperature. The zoo staff had prepared for the animals, the hay, so that they could make themselves cozy and warm nest. During hibernation, predators spend a large part of the reserves accumulated during summer and autumn. In total they are losing about 20% of body weight,» — said the representative of the zoo.

At the moment, the bears are slowly starting to return to normal diet and physical activity. Yet they are given only plant foods – fruits and vegetables, but in the coming days, the animals will get a more satisfying feed, mineral supplements and trace elements.

As noted by General Director of the Moscow zoo Svetlana Akulova, all this time, and during the winter months, the animals observed by zoologists.

«Sleep is very important and at the same time difficult process, special importance is how the animal wakes up. In the wild the awakening of bears occurs often quite suddenly and dramatically. This may be due to the melting of snow and flooding of dens or other external factors. However, at the zoo we make sure that our bears came out of hibernation without any stress, so some time awake animals remain indoors and only when they are fully awake, we are releasing them in external enclosures,» — said Akulov.

According to her, all winter, the zoo staff behave very quietly near the animals so as not to disturb their sleep bears very light sleeper. «However, now with awakened predators should not make noise so as not to disturb them. We hope that guests of the zoo, longing for the winter, these unique predators will behave near the enclosures as gently as possible and quietly», — said the Director of the zoo.
