The leader of the largest in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the faction «Block of Petro Poroshenko» (BPP) Arthur Gerasimov said that the Parliament on Thursday to support the initiative of the President to appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarchate for Kyiv resolution on the creation of a single local Autocephalous Church.

Earlier Tuesday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said he intends to appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarchate for Kyiv resolution on the creation of a single local Autocephalous Church. According to him, the Synod’s decision can be made until 28 July. The President asked Parliament to support his appeal. According to Poroshenko, if there is support in Parliament, it will forward the appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarch.

«Today is not only the leaders of the churches to the Ecumenical Patriarch. But the meeting (the President with leaders of fractions in Parliament — ed.) have proven that there is a unity of political elites, is the unity of the parliamentary factions on the issue. And we hope that on Thursday in Parliament we will support the vote of the President’s address to the Ecumenical Patriarch on the establishment in Ukraine of a single local Orthodox Church,» — said Gerasimov told reporters. Their communication was broadcast Ukrainian TV channels.

Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Vyacheslav Kirilenko also commented on the statements of the President. «The work already carried out by President Poroshenko on granting of the autocephaly of Ukrainian Orthodoxy, truly unique. We step away from the historic decisions of Constantinople on the independence of our Church from Moscow, while recognizing the Ecumenical Orthodoxy», — he wrote in Twitter.

The Moscow Patriarchate has in the past expressed the hope that the Ecumenical Patriarchate will not change its position on supporting the canonical Church in Ukraine.

In Ukraine today there are canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC-MP), which is a self-governing Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, and unrecognized by the world Orthodox Church structures — the «Kiev Patriarchate» (UOC-KP) and Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC). The UOC-MP has repeatedly reported on cases of harassment of priests and seizures of Orthodox churches.
