President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that he intends to appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarchate for Kyiv resolution on the creation of a single local Autocephalous Church, the Synod’s decision can be made until 28 July.

«Decided to contact the Ecumenical Patriarch with a request to grant Thomas (permission — ed.) of the autocephaly of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine. And I would ask you, colleagues, that the Parliament supported this request, and did it as quickly as possible. If the decision of the Parliament, the President, the Church hierarchy, will give the Ecumenical Patriarch,» said the President on Tuesday at a meeting with leaders of parliamentary factions, which was broadcast on Ukrainian TV channels.

According to him, all the bishops of the UOC-KP have already put the signatures under the appropriate petition to the Ecumenical Patriarch and the President. Poroshenko expressed hope that the appeal will also support Glad. According to him, the other churches in Ukraine consider signing the petition on granting of the Tomos on autocephaly.

He said that the decision of the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarch on the establishment of one local Autocephalous Church in Ukraine to be announced on July 28. «I really hope that this decision can be made to 1030 anniversary of the baptism of Ukraine-Rus’», he said.

«A United Orthodox local Church will not become public. The separation of Church and state will continue to exist. All believers have and will have the right to freely choose a specific Church and ecclesiastical jurisdiction,» — said Poroshenko.

In Ukraine today there are canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC-MP), which is a self-governing Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, and unrecognized by the world Orthodox Church structures — the «Kiev Patriarchate» (UOC-KP) and Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC). The UOC-MP has repeatedly reported on cases of harassment of priests and seizures of Orthodox churches.
