Turkey continues to move away from the European Union, said on Tuesday the European Commissioner for neighbourhood policy and negotiations to expand Johannes Hahn.

«The tests show that the country continues to significantly move away from the EU, particularly in the areas of rule of law and fundamental rights. The European Commission has repeatedly called on Turkey to refuse this negative trend,» said Khan to reporters in Strasbourg.

The Commissioner stressed that Turkey continues to be a key EU partner, and Brussels intends to continue to cooperate with Ankara in «areas of mutual interest.» While the EC does not intend to open new articles on the negotiations on the accession of Turkey to the EU, he said.

Turkey in 1963 signed an Association agreement with the EU (then, EEC), and in 1987 applied for membership in the Union. However, accession negotiations started only in 2005, and was stopped several times due to disagreements.

Now there are 16 out of 35 chapters of the negotiation file. In March last year, Brussels has stepped up negotiations in exchange for Turkey’s agreement to help reduce the influx of migrants to Europe.

The relationship between the EU and Turkey deteriorated after an armed coup in the country in the summer of 2016 — the European Union criticized the subsequent reaction of the Turkish authorities, mass arrests and other measures Ankara has suspended preparations for the opening of new chapters of the negotiation file on the accession of Turkey to the European Union.
