The idea of establishing in Ukraine of a single local Autocephalous churches will strengthen the split in Ukrainian society, according to the leader of the public movement «the Ukrainian choice — the right of the people» Viktor Medvedchuk.

The Verkhovna Rada on Thursday supported the appeal of President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko to the Patriarchate of Constantinople about the creation of a single local Autocephalous Church. According to the President, the decision of the Synod on this matter can be taken until July 28.

«The fact that today, as in the days of (former President Viktor) Yushchenko, raised the topic of a local Church, does not mean the desire of the authorities to the unification of the country. Cynical interference in the religious sphere, especially in terms of confrontation, which has led to a split in society will not be able to unite the Ukrainian people. On the contrary, a gross interference in matters of faith, is threatened by increasing fragmentation. But much more cynical that, raising the issue of creating a single national Church, the government is trying to cover up a political rift» — quoted Medvedchuk’s press service, the message published on the page in Facebook.

The Moscow Patriarchate has in the past expressed the hope that the Ecumenical Patriarchate will not change its position on supporting the canonical Church in Ukraine.

In Ukraine today there are canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC-MP), which is a self-governing Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, and unrecognized by the world Orthodox Church structures — the «Kiev Patriarchate» (UOC-KP) and Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC). The UOC-MP has repeatedly reported on cases of harassment of priests and seizures of Orthodox churches.
