European Commissioner for EU enlargement, Johannes Hahn, expressed on Thursday at the opening of the summit EU-Western Balkans in Sofia optimistic about the prospects of dialogue between Serbia and the breakaway Republic of Kosovo.

Ahead of the summit, the head of EU diplomacy Federica Mogherini met with President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic and leader of Kosovo Hashim Thaci. According to the European external action service, the leaders reaffirmed their readiness to continue «intensive efforts to achieve a comprehensive normalization of relations.»

«I’m always optimistic that the new strategy clearly indicates that there are prospects for everyone, it is also in the interest of Kosovo to work on a solution on a legally binding agreement, I am sure that it creates an incentive to reach agreement as soon as possible», — told reporters the Commissioner.

Meeting of the heads of States and governments of the EU countries with the leaders of the Balkan countries — Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, and the self-proclaimed Republic of Kosovo will be held on Thursday in Sofia. The heads of States will discuss issues of deepening cooperation in addressing common security threats and migration, and the ways to assist States of the Western Balkans on their path of European reforms.

Kosovo Albanian structures in Pristina in February 2008 unilaterally declared independence from Serbia. The self-proclaimed Republic does not recognize Serbia, Russia, China, Israel, Iran, Spain, Greece and several other States.
