The combination of viagra and one of of flu vaccines turned out to be a very effective tool in the fight against cancer metastases, according to a paper published in the journal OncoImmunology.

«Two already proven and relatively cheap drug can solve one of the main problems in the fight against cancer. If our conclusions find confirmation in clinical trials, the combination of viagra and vaccines could become the first tool for solving problems with the immune system that occurs after removal of the tumors,» said Rebecca Auer (Rebecca Auer) from the University of Ottawa (Canada).

Viagra, as recent experiments have proved not only a means for dealing with problems in the personal life of the man, the candidate for the cure of serious illnesses. For example, two years ago doctors found that sildenafil, the main component of these pills, possesses antimicrobial and anticancer properties.

Viagra and its analogues inhibit the enzyme PDE-5 that controls blood flow in the genitals of men and the activity of some types of immune cells. After removal of the tumor, many components of the immune system be suppressed and, as suggested by scientists, blocking PDE-5 can restore them.

Auer and her team tested this idea by observing how the combination of viagra and various drugs already used in medical practice, affect the lives of mice, which they implanted several aggressive cancerous tumors extracted from human lung.

When rodent tumor metastases, the researchers removed part of the tumor and injected large doses of viagra in combination with one of the popular flu vaccines, which served as a kind of decoy for the immune system.

Experiments have shown, on average, in the body of the mouse before the operation took about 40 metastasis, after tumor removal, if the doctors did nothing, their number grew to 120-150. The animal quickly perished, and the chances of his recovery was zero.

If doctors injected mice with viagra and its analogues or a combination with the flu vaccine, the number of metastases was reduced to 24 in the first case and 11 in the second. The reason for this was that the suppression of the work of the PDE-5 stimulated the work «killer cells» of the immune system responsible for the fight against cancer and neutralize other calf, responsible for immune suppression.

Now, as noted by Auer, her team will organize the first clinical trials, which will involve 24 volunteers from the Ottawa hospital, preparing to remove tumours in the abdominal cavity. If these tests complete successfully, scientists expect that viagra can quickly take the place of one of the most effective means to combat metastases.
