South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir met his former Deputy and leader of the rebel movement Reecom Masara in the Sudanese capital Khartoum said South Sudan radio Tamazuj, citing the Ambassador of Sudan in Juba.

«Arrangements are being made to invite President Salva Kiir for a personal meeting with Dr. Reecom Mashara,» said Ambassador Adil Ibrahim Mustafa (Adil Ibrahim Mustafa).

He also said that the meeting between President Kiir with Reecom Masara scheduled for the period after the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr between 19 and 24 June. It is expected that the two leaders will discuss «all outstanding issues».

The proposal to hold the meeting came from the intergovernmental authority on development (IGAD) during the recent negotiations at an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. Reportedly, both leaders expressed interest in negotiations «for peace in the country.»

Mustafa said the meeting will also be attended by the Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed, and noted that Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir offered to take on the organization of the planned meetings in the framework of regional efforts to end the protracted civil war in southern Sudan.

Since 2013 in South Sudan continues a bloody armed conflict between the representatives of the peoples Dink, to which President Salva Kiir, and the Nuer tribe, the descendant of which is Riec Machar, who led the rebel movement. South Sudan seceded from Sudan in 2011.
