The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a resolution condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza.

The document was approved by 120 States, including Russia, China, India, South Africa, France and Turkey, opposed by 8 (Israel, USA, Australia, Nauru, Micronesia and the Solomon Islands), a further 45 countries abstained (including UK, Netherlands, Germany, Canada, Poland). Submitted to the General Assembly a document largely repeated the wording of the draft resolution, which previously passed in the UN security Council because of the veto of the United States.

The draft resolution prepared by the Arab countries, «deplored the use of excessive, disproportionate and indiscriminate force by Israel against Palestinian civilians in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem and the Gaza strip». The document demands that Israel «desist from such acts and to comply with legal obligations.»

Also the UN calls for «prompt action to ensure an immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire», and also «urges to consider measures to ensure the safety and protection of Palestinian civilians in the occupied Palestinian territory, including the Gaza strip».

US trying to change the resolution

At the meeting of the General Assembly of the United States presented amendments to the text of the resolution the Arab countries. U.S. permanent representative Nikki Haley called the resolution in its original form was «absolutely one-sided», since the text does not mention Hamas. The US has proposed to amend the text of the change, condemning the actions of the group.

«If we were honest, we would recognize that nobody is perfect on each side of the conflict. But no one is good, if you pretend that all the fault of one party,» said Haley.

Israel’s permanent representative to the UN, Danny Danon, said before the vote that those who approve the resolution, «support Hamas».

The US proposal was sought on the additional vote of the General Assembly. The amendments were supported by 62 countries, was opposed by 58 countries, including Russia, 42 abstained. The Chairman of the UN Miroslav lajčák held that the amendment is not accepted, because it did not receive the two-thirds majority of the votes. In turn, Haley said that the initiative of the United States should be treated in another article of the Charter, and can be considered as adopted upon receiving a simple majority of votes. The United States filed an appeal against the ruling of the President of the General Assembly, but it also did not receive support as a result of the amendment was finally rejected.

The worsening situation in Gaza

Protests in the Gaza strip worsened after the US decision to move its Embassy from tel Aviv to Jerusalem last month. Israel calls Jerusalem its «United and indivisible» capital, including its Eastern areas and the historic centre, captured half a century ago from Jordan and later annexed. The main part of the international community does not recognize the annexation and considers East Jerusalem and the West Bank of the Jordan river, to the occupied territories.

According to the latest data of the authorities of the autonomy, during clashes killed 129 Palestinians, including 16 children, with another 13.6 thousand people were injured.
