Acquittals in cases of espionage in Russia never was, said the lawyer Ivan Pavlov, commenting on RIA Novosti the arrest in Moscow on suspicion of espionage citizen of Romania Karina Tsurkan.

«I know that acquittals in cases of espionage we have never had. Is that the case is stopped in connection with absence of structure of a crime under investigation, but if the case goes to trial, it ends in a conviction,» said Pavlov.

He recalled that article 276 of the criminal code (espionage) provides for penalties of up to 20 years, and in the jurisprudence of punishment is prescribed depending on the actual circumstances of the case. According to the lawyer, the espionage case to investigate at least a year.

Pavlov expressed his willingness to defend Turcan, but so far it has not made such a request. «I don’t know if she has a lawyer she had chosen. I suspect that she may be appointed attorney recommended by the investigation,» he said.
