The President of the international Federation Council Committee Konstantin Kosachev argued with the Ambassador of Germany in Moscow Rüdiger von pricem on the theme of the reunification of the Crimea with Russia.

«The basis of our policy has not changed. We are keen to develop and promote our relations in the widest possible spectrum. Fortunately, we have managed it. We are making efforts to contribute in the field of culture, science, Commerce are all areas where relations are developing very dynamically,» said the German Ambassador at a meeting with Russian Senator on Wednesday.

According to the Ambassador, it is, however, not relieve, the two countries «from the obligation to solve problems, which in itself is not resolved even after a certain period of time.» So he responded to the statement Kosachev on the crisis in Eastern Ukraine that «the time that has passed, still the evidence in favor of such a policy of harsh criticism of Russia, almost of solidarity with Ukraine in what is happening in the region, more conflict is delaying, rather than promoting its successful discharge».

In particular, von Fritsch was used in relation to changes in the status of Crimea, the word «annexation», which, according to him, will not be recognized by Germany.

«We need to find ways to handle it. With regard to the conflict in the South-East, we believe that given goodwill on both sides there are opportunities off of the conflict. Were made proposals which met with the support of the Russian President. Germany and France will tirelessly work to resolve conflict, to create conditions for the development of relations with Russia», — said the Ambassador.

Kosachev on this said he was ready to discuss the topic of Crimea is not his status, and what is happening in the region — only those who’ve been there personally. «We are absolutely open to any foreign guests in the Republic of Crimea and I think that the more there will be people from abroad, the more objective will be the perception of this situation and abroad in General and in the EU, and in particular in Germany», — said the Senator.

The search for analogies

Von Fritsch went on to bend the line. «In the 1960s we were told that the Pope can speak about the prevention of pregnancy if he to such issues are not involved», — he said.

«It’s in our favor the argument, rather than yours,» retorted Kosachev.

The German Ambassador remained adamant. «No one will make us renounce our international principles and the principles of international law,» he said.

«We have over 50 years did not recognize the annexation of the Soviet Union the Baltic countries. The Soviet Union, we were even forbidden to accept them, however, this has not changed our position relative to these countries», — said von Fritsch.

Kosachev noted that these situations can not be compared. «In Crimea the situation is essentially the opposite, and pretend that these situations are comparable, which means, in my opinion, just to deviate from the values that the EU proclaims, Germany, where at the very top of the interests of the people, and not some formal considerations,» said the Senator.

The Ambassador acknowledged that the German authorities, «of course, with you in that there is the right to vote and that it is necessary to take into account the will of the people in certain regions, but the question is, whose consent is necessary to, need to involve such structures as the OSCE, UN».

Kosachev asked to be reminded what a referendum was organized in Kosovo.

«That Kosovo’s example is useful to show that it was not done in the Crimea. The West did everything from the point of view of the decision of a question under international law — raised the topic in the OSCE, in the UN. But there were only a refusal to allow the question. With regard to the Crimea — there was a different situation. Was the issue discussed in the UN Security Council, OSCE? No,» — said the Ambassador.

Ending exchange of arguments, Kosachev recalled that the West never asked for permission for the bombing of Belgrade.

Crimea became a Russian region after held there in March 2014 referendum in which 96.77% of voters of the Republic of Crimea and 95.6% of residents of Sevastopol voted for joining Russian Federation. Crimean authorities held a referendum after a coup in Ukraine in February 2014. Ukraine still considers Crimea its but temporarily occupied territory. The Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that the inhabitants of Crimea democratically in full compliance with international law and the UN Charter voted for reunification with Russia. According to the Russian President, the question of Crimea «closed permanently».
