Church and state in Russia today, «looking in the same direction», while the Russian Orthodox Church is not fighting for power, but is «great public power», said Tuesday the Chairman of the Synodal Department for Church and society and the media of the Moscow Patriarchate, Vladimir Legoyda.

«When you talk about the relationship with the state, we have at this point in history very often the Church and the state in Russia and some other countries of historical Rus’ — looking in the same direction. This is great,» said Legoyda at a press conference in MIA «Russia today».

Answering the question about how the Orthodox Church can influence the political process, he noted that «the Church changes people and people change the world.»

«It was not necessary for the Church to influence the policy of Prince Vladimir of some special vector method, sending it a policy here or there. The Church changed the heart of Prince Vladimir, but he changed his policy. That is, the Christian – be he a politician, a businessman, a teacher, a surgeon, a pilot, but if it is a conscious Christian, he cannot relate his life and in the professions, too, with their ideological views,» — said Legoyda.

However, he said that if we are talking about an Orthodox Minister, that «this does not mean that his Christianity must manifest itself in lobbying of interests of the Church organization, but that means he cannot leave outside his office his moral feeling.»
