French customs officers have intercepted in the Caribbean sea off the coast of Martinique a sailing ship, on Board of which was discovered 1.5 tons of cocaine, said Minister of civil service and budget Gerald Darmanin.

According to the communiqué, the boat of the customs service detained a suspicious boat on the night of July 19. However, bad weather prevented the servants of the law to go on Board the vessel whose crew consists of captain and assistant – volunteered to follow in the Porte Saint Martin for further verification.

The next morning, the smugglers set fire to his ship and tried to escape on the life raft. Customs officers overtook the fugitives and asked for help the national Navy frigate «germinal», which firefighters extinguished a sailboat.

During the inspection on Board the vessel was discovered 1.5 tons of cocaine with a market value of about 60 million euros.

In 2017, the French customs officers confiscated 83.4 tons of drugs, including 11.7 tons of cocaine.
