Kovtun: Murmansk region successfully cooperates with neighboring countries

Murmansk oblast is successfully implementing the cooperation with municipalities of the Barents Euro-Arctic region, despite a cooling of foreign relations in the world arena, said the Governor of the Murmansk region Marina Kovtun told reporters.

The meeting of the head of the region, Secretary of the Union state Grigory Rapota, who is on a working visit to the region took place during the expert and media press tour in Murmansk oblast, organized by the standing Committee of the Union state and the MIA «Russia today». The purpose of the press tour, and explore the implementation of the Russian program of development of the Arctic.

Kovtun noted that the Russian foreign Ministry acknowledged the cooperation in the Barents Euro-Arctic region success story. «We cooperate with the regions of Norway, Sweden, Finland, we have signed long-term agreements, e.g. the agreement with the Norwegian Finnmark was 25 years old. We are so closely cooperating and collaborating that no cooling on the world political scene was not reflected in our interregional cooperation, — said Kovtun.

She also said that over the years the region has implemented numerous international projects. One of them is complex for long-term storage of solid nuclear waste in Sayda Bay.

«This is the product of international cooperation. Worked on it about 12 countries today, the problem of disposal and long term storage of nuclear waste is solved. A unique project which has no equal», — said the head of the region.

The Treaty establishing the Union state of Russia and Belarus was signed on 8 December 1999 in Moscow. According to the agreement, the powers of the Union state includes foreign policy, defense and security, fiscal, monetary and tax system, customs, systems of energy, transport and communications. The permanent Committee of the Union state is the working body of the Supreme state Council and Council of Ministers.
