The Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill expressed hope that the celebration 1030-anniversary of the baptism of Russia will contribute to overcoming the divisions and schisms in Ukraine.

«We will solemnly celebrate this day (July 28) in Moscow, a solemn service will be held in Kiev – mother of Russian cities, where there was a baptism. And we hope that the celebration 1030-anniversary of the baptism of Rus in particular will contribute to overcoming the divisions, disagreements, schisms in the Ukrainian land», — the Patriarch has told, opening on Wednesday meeting of the Supreme Church Council.

Speaking about the meaning of this holiday, he noted that «for people of faith, people of the Church is the event in the first place is because the light of Christ came to our earth.»

«We must never lose sight of the fact that all that happened as a result, 1030-year period of our history, all the development of people, countries, culture, spirituality, and all its source is the great historical event… the Gospel message, touching the hearts and minds of our people, transformed the souls of our ancestors and laid the deepest spiritual tradition in which developed the national life, culture, education and science», — said the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church.

According to the Patriarch, perhaps because of this Christian Orthodox tradition, the Russian people managed to overcome the disasters he encountered on his historic journey.

The baptism of Russia occurred in 988 and is connected with the name of Prince Vladimir, whom historians called the great, the Church of the Holy equal to the apostles, and the people called Vladimir the Red Sun. The feast of the Baptism of Russia, by tradition, is celebrated on the day of memory of Prince Vladimir (July 28).
