Observation of interaction between a supermassive black hole at the center of the milky Way and the light of neighboring stars have confirmed the General theory of relativity. Write about the scientists in an article published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

«This is only the second convergence of the stars S2 and the black hole, which we were able to track. On the other hand, the accuracy of the tools has grown significantly over the last ten years, which allowed to follow up this meeting with super high resolution. We wanted to make the most of this opportunity directly to observe the relativistic effects predicted by the theory of relativity,» said Reinhard Genzel (Reinhard Genzel) from Institute for extraterrestrial physics, max Planck Society in Garching (Germany).

In the center of the milky Way, and presumably all the other galaxies of the Universe, is inhabited by unusually large black hole. In our case it is about four million times heavier than the Sun and located at a distance of 26 thousand light years from Earth.

The black hole, which astronomers call the Sgr A*, surrounded by dozens of stars and several large clouds of gas, periodically approaching and passing at a dangerous distance from her.

These convergence and related relativistic effects as predicted by the theory of relativity, will be a special way to affect the orbit of the star, causing it to move in a different course after she «escapes» from the gravitational embrace of the black hole.

Scientists have over 20 years of watching the star S2, one of the nearest neighbors Sgr A*. In 2003 she moved closer to her on the dangerous distance that for the first time allowed scientists to trace the change if its trajectory under the action of gravity of the black hole. Following «rendezvous» holes and stars took place only in may of this year, what scientists are very long and carefully prepared, vykraivaya time on dozens of the leading telescopes in the world.

Hubble, VLT and other major Observatory, the Earth began to conduct almost constant surveillance for the S2 since April of this year. In may, as noted by Genzel, scientists began to notice the first traces of what gravity is Sgr A* beginning a strong influence on the behavior of the stars.

At that moment, she was at a distance of 20 billion kilometers from the event horizon of a black hole and moving at fantastic speed in 7650 kilometers per second, or 2.5% of the speed of light.

These interactions, in particular, manifested in the fact that the color of the star changed dramatically under the action of so-called gravitational redshift – the stretching of electromagnetic waves as they enter the field with a strong gravitational field. In the case of S2, this means that the star significantly «flushed» when approaching Sgr A*, and then acquired its usual color.

The strength of this effect, as shown by the observations of the VLT, is fully consistent with what predicted by the theory of relativity and the associated phenomenon of gravitational time dilation.

Similarly, the trajectory of S2 is deviated from its «normal» Newtonian orbit to the value that was calculated with the help of calculations of Einstein. Both, as I think Genzel and his colleagues, once again suggests that the great physicist was right in the description how well does the fabric of space-time and the universe in General.
