More than 200 performers of Orthodox chants, 10 choirs from five regions of the Russian Federation, representatives of Belarus, Greece, Montenegro and Finland will perform at the IV international St. Vladimir’s Orthodox singing festival «Illuminator», which will be held on the island July 28-29, according to a press release from the organizers of the event — Transfiguration Stavropegial Valaam monastery.
«For two days on the island of Valaam will gather the best performers of Orthodox chants from different countries, to show the audience the greatness and the unity of the Orthodox singing culture. Among the participants of this year’s festival — choirs from Russia, Belarus, Moldova, Montenegro and Finland. Special guest of the festival will be Professor of Byzantine music — Archimandrite Nikodimos Kabarnos from Greece», — stated in the message.
For the first time in the four-year history, the concert program will feature artists from Finland «Vyborg singing brothers» (Viipurin Lauluveikot). Last year the renowned choir turned 120 years old. On the island, they will perform religious and secular works. One of the songs will be the calling card of the team — «Solemn March 29», which for them was written by the famous Finnish composer Jean Sibelius.

Also on the main stage of the festival, the Song festival grounds, will feature the choir of the Academy of arts named Musicescu from Moldova, Belarus team Salutaris, Russian bell ringer, Alexei Pugachev, and many others.
The main topic of the festival will be the feat of new Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Orthodox Church. The organizers note that «the feat of new martyrs is of particular importance for the preservation of the Orthodox faith in Russia and its spiritual revival in our days.»
The festival is held with the blessing of Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill and is intended to serve the preservation of historic and cultural heritage of Russia, the revival of traditions of Orthodox singing. For the fourth consecutive year to the Valaam monastery, spiritual and attracts choirs from all over the world, «to preserve and increase the rich heritage of the Orthodox singing and to present the culture of their peoples.»
