Near the border with North Korea in Primorye for the first time recorded new leopards

Camera traps at the southernmost point of the national Park «Land of leopard» in Primorye, near the border with the DPRK has recorded four individuals of the Amur leopard, two of the predator is seen for the first time, according to the institution.

One of the new monitoring stations established in the Tumen river basin near the place where the borders of Russia, China and North Korea. In 2013, during the winter census is recorded the trail of a leopard, so we decided to explore this place.

«Among «Savannah» landscapes of the South of Khasan district the camera recorded four leopards. Two of them, the adult male and female Leo and Leo 59M 101F, first noted at the border with China, about 10 kilometers from this place. The other two kittens-boys, aged about a year — was recorded traps «Land of the leopard» for the first time. Thus, the photo-monitoring data not only confirmed the presence of leopard, but also reported the presence on this site-breeders», — stated in the message.

According to a senior researcher of the fgbi «Land of leopard» Dina Matuhina, the pictures confirm that leopards exhibit adaptation to life in different environments – from coniferous and broad-leaved forests to open woodlands and grassy-shrub.

«In addition, the presence of rare cats about seven kilometers from the border with North Korea gives hope that our wards can also go to the territory of this country,» said Matyukhin.

Now the question about the possibility of joint consideration of the far Eastern leopard and Amur tiger in North Korea raised at meetings of different level, says the national Park.

National Park «Land of leopard» was established on 5 April 2012. Its area is 262 thousand hectares. Here is located 70% of the leopard range. In 2017 in this area recorded 84 adults leopard and 19 kittens.
