The organization of collective security Treaty (CSTO) unites six former Soviet countries – Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Earlier, the Special investigation service of Armenia has charged the CSTO Secretary General Yuri Khachaturov in the overthrow of the constitutional order in the criminal case about the protesters on 1 March 2008. The court in Yerevan Khachaturov was released on bail.

The Armenian opposition led by first President Levon Ter-Petrosyan, who ran in the presidential elections of 19 February 2008 and have lost to Serzh Sargsyan, then held in the center of Yerevan rallies, expressing dissatisfaction with the official results of the vote. The protests on March 1-2 resulted in riots and clashes of protesters with police, in which ten people were killed and about 200 were injured.
