The ultimate goal of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to grant autocephaly to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. This is stated in the message on the website of President Petro Poroshenko.

Yesterday in Kyiv to participate in the celebration 1030-anniversary of the Baptism of Russia there has arrived delegation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

She delivered a message from Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, which says in particular that the Church of Constantinople «took the initiative to restore the unity of the Orthodox believers of Ukraine, with the ultimate goal to give the Ukrainian Church autocephaly».

Autocephaly as the question of independence

Currently the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church is part of the Russian Orthodox Church, however, has the status of self-governing and has the rights of broad autonomy. To obtain autocephaly means to get out from under the subordination of the Moscow Patriarchate.

As explained by President Petro Poroshenko, autocephaly for the Ukrainian Church is the question of the independence and national security.

«The army protects our land. The language protects our heart. Faith protects our soul,» he wrote on Twitter

The reaction of the ROC and the UOC

As explained by the Deputy head of the Department for external Church relations of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Archpriest Mykolai Danylevych, the message does not contain anything unusual or extraordinary.

«After listening to the text at this link, I can say that nothing unusual, extraordinary, or such that we’ve not heard spoken by the Patriarch was not there.. if you look the official part of the meeting, the words and the reaction of the President, it seems that he agreed to negotiate to save face. So far it all looks. Everything is calm, » wrote Belarusian in Facebook.

The Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill, in his turn, noted that attempts to separate the Ukrainian Orthodox Church from the Moscow Patriarchate could lead to disaster throughout the Orthodox world.

«Now the powers, alien to Orthodoxy, make a deliberate effort to destroy the unity of the Russian Orthodox Church,» Patriarch Kirill said.

According to him, the Russian Orthodox Church will never abandon «his Dnieper baptismal font, from the tradition coming from the Holy Prince Vladimir»

«For our Church in Kiev is the same Shrine to which all Orthodox Christians are Constantinople or Jerusalem, or Kosovo and Metohija for the Serbian Orthodox Church», — said the head of the Russian Orthodox Church.
